The Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition (TPCC) is a 501-(C)-3 non-profit organizations committed to the advocacy of making prostate cancer a key public health care priority; as well as helping to end the devastating impact of prostate cancer on men, families and the greater society.
The Statistics Are Grim
One out of six American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer
The American Cancer Society has estimated that there have been 232,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed since 2007.
Over 27,000 men, 28% of those diagnosed in the last three years, will lose their battle with the disease this year alone.
Most men do not even know they are at risk and do not understand the symptoms that may indicate a need for prostate cancer screening and possibly treatment.
Education Is Key
The Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition (TPCC), provides information, education and understanding of the risks of developing prostate cancer, treatment options and the need for screening starting at age 50 for men at average risk and 40-45 for those at risk including African-American men, which is essential to the prevention and successful treatment of prostate cancer.
The TPCC, which started with seminars and presentations at local churches, has grown into a collaborative of five local health organizations working to decrease the incidence of prostate cancer.
TPCC programs now include a youth/adult initiative geared toward providing younger men with education on the prostate gland and the risks associated with prostate cancer.
- being exposed to radiation or certain chemicals
- infection with certain viruses or bacteria
- family history of certain cancers
There is no sure way to prevent prostate cancer; however the chance of increasing or decreasing the odds of preventing cancer is through certain risk or protective factors:
- regular physical activity
- maintaining a healthy weight
